If you are a serious golfer, it’s likely you’ve spent many hours at the driving range and you may have even spent lots of time viewing instructional videos in order to develop the perfect swing. What you may be missing is the psychology of golf. If your mindset doesn’t support you in your quest for success, then your technical training may be going to waste.
Remember how in the movie “Happy Gilmore” that Adam Sandler’s character would picture himself in his “happy place” to ease his stress about his game? It is often a mind over matter but in psychology we learn that the subconscious mind is more powerful than the conscious mind. Hiding in the subconscious mind are all the limiting beliefs that you have about yourself and negative memories of perceived failures you’ve experienced – all of which can negatively impact your game. There is a way to work with the subconscious mind that will allow you to release the struggle in trying to push away any negative thoughts, beliefs or distractions despite your efforts to control your thoughts the Happy Gilmore way.
What if you had more control over your thoughts and emotions and were able to feel more relaxed and confident automatically. As soon as you step onto the course, you are no longer distracted by negative emotions or limiting beliefs about your ability to play a great game. You will enjoy the game much more and won’t have to visit your “happy place” before each swing, you will be there already. All the of the technical training you’ve received from golf swing videos, training with golf pros and golf mentor friends just kicks in automatically for you without you having to remember all of the tips you’ve received. You will find that you’re “in the zone” and feel more confident more often.
You may be familiar with mental training techniques such as NLP or neural linguistic programming which is very effective at over-riding any negative mental programming by helping your brain to develop new neural pathways about success before it evens happens. Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT is another method that can assist you in permanently releasing any negative emotions that fuel memories of failure so that you don’t have to force your “success rehearsals” before your game. In addition to being able to develop a mental attitude that supports your success, you will feel calmer and more confident in all aspects of your life.
